One day in early 2011, Raphael Schaad flew from the small valley in the Swiss Alps where he was raised, to Silicon Valley, to begin work the very next day in the garage where the startup Flipboard was born. He arrived with only one suitcase – a physical manifestation of the simplicity and minimalist aesthetic that is his passion and hallmark. A graduate of Bern University of Applied Sciences with a degree in computer-vision, Raphael is as fascinated with numbers as he is with design. Previously, he ran his own software consulting firm in Switzerland and worked in Tokyo building the popular text editor, iA Writer. At Flipboard, Raphael worked as a designer and iOS engineer to transform the media landscape. His worldly possessions still fit in that single, battered suitcase.
