Flipboard’s brand designer Byron Parr was born and raised in Barton-on-sea, in the New Forest, which was once William the Conquerer’s private hunting ground. The area is known as the California of England, or so he says. Regardless, it’s where Parr developed a love of the ocean, surfing—and gazing out at the distant horizon. An award-winning creative director and designer, he graduated from Central Saint Martins in London, and spent his journeyman years in branding, editorial, fashion and product design, most notably at Wolff Olins and the magazine Wallpaper*. He moved to the real California in 2006 to work at innovation and design consultancy IDEO, with clients such as Nike and Samsung, then moved to New York to be Design Director at M·A·C Cosmetics working with the likes of photographers Sølve Sundsbø, Mario Sorrenti, filmmaker Ruth Hogben and stylist Nicola Formichetti. Four years later, an opportunity to help define the brand at Flipboard brought Parr back to California. He still gazes at the horizon but the surfing is much improved.
